On May 30, a cyberattcker took hold of all of the University`s computers and emails. The school paid a ransom of $20,000 to the attcker. The university`s IT (information technology) department managed to repair the damage done and as of June 6, students and teachers are now able to use their emails. They can`t find evidence of personal or university data being released public. The attacker has not been found yet, but the university is working with the Calgary police department.

In May 2015, a woman named Mercy Cushworth gave birth to her son Moses. She said that the minute she saw Moses she noticed he had a striking resemblance to her husband, Rich. Mercy went to sleep and her baby went to the nursery, when they brought her her son in the morning he didn't look like the same baby. She put up a fight telling the doctors that this wasn't her baby but they kept reassuring her that it was. She finally just brushed it off, but she felt horrible because she felt like she was betraying him by thinking that. For the next 2 months she stayed in El Salvador and she bonded and raised the baby but a week before she was supposed to go back to Texas she took the baby to a private hospital to get a DNA test. She got the results once she was back in Texas, the test proved that there was no way that the baby was hers. The next morning she took a flight back to El Salvador and went to an attorneys office to get a lawyer to investigate her case. The hospital had to call all of the women that had had a baby that day back to the hospital to get a DNA test. After 12 days they finally found her real baby and the other baby`s real parents. The Government of El Salvador is still investigating the case.
The morning of Wednesday, June 1, Fort McMurray residents were allowed to return home. The road blocks were lifted at 6am. It was an emotional return as the residents got to see first hand the damage of the fire, 10% of the people lost their homes and 30% of firefighters lost their homes. They were expecting between 14,000 and 15,000 people to show up alone on Wednesday morning and they had buses to transport about 2,000 people that don't have their own vehicle into Fort McMurray. One of the Save On Foods was completely shut down and won't be able to open for another week or more, while the other one just needed to be cleaned out and restocked and is now reopened.
A 21 year old South African firefighter, Sibongile Zwane, saw the reports of the forest fire in Fort McMurray and it scared her because "she had never seen flames leaping across roads and climbing to the tops of tall pine trees." A boot camp by Canadian trainers was put on and Zwane was one of the 300 South African firefighters that joined it and was then after headed to Fort McMurray. Their mission was to be the biggest non- military deployment of firefighters out of South Africa and to arrive to be a huge help by relieving all of the tired Albertan firefighters. The deployment of these 300 firefighters was seen as a huge opportunity for many men and women who were jobless, and the government saw it as repaying Canada for helping during the anti-apartheid struggle. They have created a government funded program called "Working on Fire" that has recruited and trained 5000 South African men and women firefighter to serve on 200 bases across South Africa.
A 12 year old black boy named Tamir Rice was shot by policemen in November 2014 because he was playing on a playground with a toy gun. When the case got investigated the investigator released a statement on why the actions of the officer were reasonable. The investigator said it was a tragedy that Tamir Rice died but it would be a tragedy if the officer, Timothy Loehmann, lost his job over it. Timothy Loehmann shot Tamir Rice dead 2 seconds after the police approached the scene and there has been an outcry in the US as to what should happen to the officer. This last opinion that was released was the third to say that Timothy Loehmann was justified and his actions were reasonable to shoot Tamir Rice.
If they don't fire or punish police officers who do stuff like this then they will continue to do stuff like this. More officers will start to follow the other ones cause they won't get in trouble for it. In 2013 the Edmonton community wrote a letter to the NDP government asking them to fund for the police who come to the school and teach the programs for students. The schools are having problems coming up with the money to pay for police services. The Alberta Justice Minister said that they had alreadh spent too much money on them and that they wanted to keep all the officers available and not in schools except that in smaller communities they are permitted to fund for resource officers in schools.
I believe that the government should fund for resource officers in schools because if the school can't afford to get these programs then kids won't learn about stuff like the D.A.R.E program and other things. I think that if we didn't get these programs then crime rates would go up, juvie records would probably go up, ect. In 2012 the gender identity bill was passed in ontario and a man in Ontario who claimed to be transgender and went under the name of Jessica was able to stay at a women's shelter instead of a men's shelter. He sexually assaulted several women when they were either in the shower, a sleep and even out in the open touching them inappropriately. He lived in Quebec before moving to Ontario. In Quebec he had been in jail for 4 years after sexually assaulting a 5 year old girl who was a family friend and for raping a mentally challenged 27 year old women. Now many people are against the gender identity bill which lets transgender male and female use their desired washrooms and other things.
I am against this bill because there have been tons of reports of people being sexually assaulted by the opposite sex in public washrooms. Men and women have been claiming to be transgender so they can go into the opposite washroom and prey on the opposite sex. I don't feel comfortable with this because that could happen to anyone including myself and I don't think I'd feel safe. At Big Country outdoors they’ve always supplied weapons of defence against wild life, but more recently customers have been coming in looking for self defence weapons. There used to be an average of 1 person every 2 weeks but now there is an average of 3 customers every week that would come in looking for self defence weapons. People’s main reason for seeking self defense weapons is crime. From the Terrorist attack on Europe sending migrants to Canada, nobody feels safe in their own country.
I think that it is sad that people can’t feel safe in their own country. People shouldn’t have to seek self defence against others in their own country, their own home. Crime has gotten way out of hand and it needs to stop. |
