“Whoever saves one life, saves the world entire”. This is a quote spoken by Itzhak Stern, from the film Schindler’s List, to Oskar Schindler. The film Schindler’s List directed by Steven Spielberg is a documentary film about Nazi Germany during World War 2 and the racial ideology surrounding the Jewish from a German’s Perspective. Spielberg uses Schindler’s List to explore the idea of individuals making a difference in the middle of horrible situations through the characters Oskar Schindler and Amon Goeth.
“There will be generations because of what you did”. This is a quote spoken by Itzhak Stern to Schindler at the end of the film Schindler’s List. Oskar Schindler was a Nazi, when the war began he took a very strong interest in the Jewish people. Schindler made a list that consisted of names of jews; this list would allow them to work in Schindler’s factory and be protected from being hurt by soldiers. The people thought that Schindler was saving them out of the kindness of his heart but in actuality he hired them because they were cheap work and hard workers due to the fact that if they worked hard then he wouldn’t get rid of them. Throughout the film you can see a development of character for Oskar Schindler. He changes his perspective on jews; they aren’t just cheap workers, they are humans who deserve a chance at life. Schindler pours everything he has into making sure that the jews would survive the war until he finally goes broke. “There will be generations because of what you did”. Stern reassures Schindler into believing that everything he did was enough. The idea of individuals making a difference during horrible situations is explored by Oskar Schindler’s realization of morality. “Power is when you have every justification to kill someone, and we don’t.” This is a quote spoken by Oskar Schindler to Amon Goeth when they were discussing what it means to have power and how to display it properly. The quote above is part of what changes Goeth’s perspective on how he should treat jews, the other thing that changes his perspective is he fell in love with a jewish girl, Helen Hirsch. Before Schindler said this to him he was very short tempered with jews but as the film progresses you see a character development for Amon Goeth. He begins to have a little more patience with simple mistakes made by the jews but it only lasts so long. In the film a jewish child drops his saddle on the ground and he forgives the child and lets him walk away, only to start shooting at him a few minutes later as he is walking away. Goeth was troubled and conflicted because he was taught to not treat jews as humans or equals but he develops feelings for one. As the leader of the nazi party in that area of Germany he could not change his perspective on how to treat them, he would look like a traitor and he would look weak. The ideas of individuals making a difference during horrible circumstances is displayed when Goeth changes his perspective on jews and tries to get Helen on to the list, the list that would keep her alive and protect her. “They won’t soon forget the name Schindler here, I can tell you that. “Oskar Schindler,” they’ll say. “Everybody remembers him. He did something extraordinary.”' This is a quote spoken by Oskar Schindler to his wife Emilie Schindler in a conversation during the development of Oskar Schindler’s character. Before his character development Schindler was only using the jews, the realization that they are more than just cheap workers makes him change his opinion on them. Schindler believed that he would do something “extraordinary” that make him remembered and he worked hard to make that the outcome; however as the film progresses so does his character in the development of starting to care for others and not be as selfish. The ideas of individuals making a difference during horrible circumstances is displayed when Schindler reaches his goal in being remembered by doing something extraordinary but the original path he laid out had been exchanged for a completely different path with the same outcome. “Whoever saves one life, saves the world entire”, a quote spoken by Itzhak Stern to Oskar Schindler in the final scenes of the film Schindler’s List. Oskar Schindler was one individual who worked hard to save the jews lives throughout the war. Schindler thought he didn’t do enough but Stern reassures him that everything he did was enough and to the them that means saving the entire world. Even though Amon Goeth didn’t save people he did go against every instinct he was raised with to save Helen. It is not a huge thing in comparison to Schindler but it was enough to change the world for one person.
