“Whoever saves one life, saves the world entire”. This is a quote spoken by Itzhak Stern, from the film Schindler’s List, to Oskar Schindler. The film Schindler’s List directed by Steven Spielberg is a documentary film about Nazi Germany during World War 2 and the racial ideology surrounding the Jewish from a German’s Perspective. Spielberg uses Schindler’s List to explore the idea of individuals making a difference in the middle of horrible situations through the characters Oskar Schindler and Amon Goeth.
“There will be generations because of what you did”. This is a quote spoken by Itzhak Stern to Schindler at the end of the film Schindler’s List. Oskar Schindler was a Nazi, when the war began he took a very strong interest in the Jewish people. Schindler made a list that consisted of names of jews; this list would allow them to work in Schindler’s factory and be protected from being hurt by soldiers. The people thought that Schindler was saving them out of the kindness of his heart but in actuality he hired them because they were cheap work and hard workers due to the fact that if they worked hard then he wouldn’t get rid of them. Throughout the film you can see a development of character for Oskar Schindler. He changes his perspective on jews; they aren’t just cheap workers, they are humans who deserve a chance at life. Schindler pours everything he has into making sure that the jews would survive the war until he finally goes broke. “There will be generations because of what you did”. Stern reassures Schindler into believing that everything he did was enough. The idea of individuals making a difference during horrible situations is explored by Oskar Schindler’s realization of morality. “Power is when you have every justification to kill someone, and we don’t.” This is a quote spoken by Oskar Schindler to Amon Goeth when they were discussing what it means to have power and how to display it properly. The quote above is part of what changes Goeth’s perspective on how he should treat jews, the other thing that changes his perspective is he fell in love with a jewish girl, Helen Hirsch. Before Schindler said this to him he was very short tempered with jews but as the film progresses you see a character development for Amon Goeth. He begins to have a little more patience with simple mistakes made by the jews but it only lasts so long. In the film a jewish child drops his saddle on the ground and he forgives the child and lets him walk away, only to start shooting at him a few minutes later as he is walking away. Goeth was troubled and conflicted because he was taught to not treat jews as humans or equals but he develops feelings for one. As the leader of the nazi party in that area of Germany he could not change his perspective on how to treat them, he would look like a traitor and he would look weak. The ideas of individuals making a difference during horrible circumstances is displayed when Goeth changes his perspective on jews and tries to get Helen on to the list, the list that would keep her alive and protect her. “They won’t soon forget the name Schindler here, I can tell you that. “Oskar Schindler,” they’ll say. “Everybody remembers him. He did something extraordinary.”' This is a quote spoken by Oskar Schindler to his wife Emilie Schindler in a conversation during the development of Oskar Schindler’s character. Before his character development Schindler was only using the jews, the realization that they are more than just cheap workers makes him change his opinion on them. Schindler believed that he would do something “extraordinary” that make him remembered and he worked hard to make that the outcome; however as the film progresses so does his character in the development of starting to care for others and not be as selfish. The ideas of individuals making a difference during horrible circumstances is displayed when Schindler reaches his goal in being remembered by doing something extraordinary but the original path he laid out had been exchanged for a completely different path with the same outcome. “Whoever saves one life, saves the world entire”, a quote spoken by Itzhak Stern to Oskar Schindler in the final scenes of the film Schindler’s List. Oskar Schindler was one individual who worked hard to save the jews lives throughout the war. Schindler thought he didn’t do enough but Stern reassures him that everything he did was enough and to the them that means saving the entire world. Even though Amon Goeth didn’t save people he did go against every instinct he was raised with to save Helen. It is not a huge thing in comparison to Schindler but it was enough to change the world for one person.

“What is peace?”
Those words echo through my mind in my mother’s voice, in the pitch black of my bedroom. It is something that she often asked me everyday. Now as a young child I would answer with foolish things but I never really thought about it till now I guess. I’ve been laying here for hours thinking about those words, my mind often wandering to my mother’s kind face and her sweet sounding voice that I would kill to hear again but then my mind snaps back and those words form in my head again. I roll over and look at the glowing red numbers from my alarm clock, it hurts my eyes at first but they adjust so I can read: 4:47 am. I didn’t sleep at all last night, my mind was too busy. I sit up and I feel antsy so I stand up throw on clothes and grab my phone and earphones and run out the door. Mornings like this are perfect. There is no one alive in the world yet, and I think this is peace. I’ve always liked the time before dawn because there is no one around to remind me of who I am supposed to be, so it is easier to remember who I am. I feel free from judgement and society in this early morning. Jogging down one of the many streets filled with trees planted right on the edge of everyone’s yards to give that beautiful look of trees hanging over the streets, everything looks like it was copied and pasted into place. I have to admit it does give a pretty illusion but if everything looks the same how do you tell the difference between things. I run until the sun starts to rise and my heart drops a little. The sun brings the beginning of the day and with that the teaching of society starts. It’s like the sun awakens everything wrong with this world. Isn’t the sun supposed to be cheerful, bright, a symbol of happiness? So why do I blame the sun for everything? I suppose it is the easiest thing to blame, it’s not like it can defend itself. Does that make me a bully? My mind wanders too much. By now I have run down to main street and the world has began to come alive. Shop owners busy themselves with their morning routine getting ready to open. It’s like watching robots on a program, I wonder if they do something out of the ordinary they’ll reboot. It is possible I suppose. Everyone from a young age is programmed to think and act the same way even if we don’t recognize it. It’s quite a terrifying thought isn’t it, that everyone believes they have a free will but they actually don’t. It makes me sad to watch everyone in their set routine, so I turn on my heel and run back home. At least I can escape from the societal pressured world. I guess I’ll have to wait till tomorrow morning before the early light of dawn. That’s where I’ll find peace. The little girl in the red coat is an important theme in the film Schindler's List. Oskar Schindler is watching the Nazi’s clear out the “ghetto” and he notices a young girl in a red coat. I think that the significance of the “red coat” is that the colour stands out because it is bright but it is also the colour of blood. Oskar anxiously watches the little girl weave through the crowd of people, while the people around her are being shot but she is missed. The camera focuses on the young girl the whole time while blurring out the other people. At the end of the scene she slips into a building out of sight.
I believe that the little girl with the red coat is an important theme because later in the film you see the little girl being hauled away on a wagon dead. It makes you realize that even though children are the most influential people and they were the definition of good, they were still killed. Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself
And I don't want to change anything, Because I don't know how to deal with change Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself But there is no way to change it. The existence of this world is simply A guarantee that there exists a world that is perfect, And that happiness could be found in a grain of sand from the desert, And to die tomorrow was no worse than dying on any other day. So tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. Limits
Trinity Penner What I want in life? Now that’s a big question. It is not, per say, what I want in life, But rather what I am limited to do. What are my limits, you might ask? It is this: Society is a bully, Anxiety is clingy, and Depression is suffocating. But what if, What if the noise stopped one day? And you ask me again, What do I want in life? I will tell you that I want to be the most loving mother, With soft, caring hands that will feel safe for them. I want to love with no restrictions, I want Love to place his hands in mine and nourish my soul. But most importantly I want to feel accomplished. 1. What are your favourite moments in the book?
My favourite moment in the book is after the King of Salem send Santiago on his way he sits back and thinks about how he is not supposed to root for someone to complete their personal legends but he is silently rooting for Santiago. 2. In your own opinion, and if you had to choose only one thing, what is the only thing worth living for? What would Paulo Coehlo say is the only thing worth living for? I think that the only thing worth living for is life fulfillment and happiness. But people confuse happiness with content. I think that Paulo Coehlo would say the same thing because that is the main theme in the book, Personal Legend journeys and fulfillment of them. “Computers will overtake humans with Artificial Intelligence within the next 100 years. When that happens, we need to make sure that the computers have goals aligned with ours.” A quote from Stephen Hawking on the topic of Artificial Intelligence. The goal of Artificial intelligence is to make a computer think and respond like a human. The idea of artificial Intelligence could be a bad thing because we can only control them to a point.
We already have Artificial Intelligence among us, it has been brought to us in the form of Siri, Cortana, Google Now, Amazon Alexa, and Amazon Echo. You can ask the assistant on your phone for help with almost anything, it is programmed to make it seem like you are almost talking to a human. The Amazon Alexa and Echo are more advanced than that. There are stories of people having both a Alexa and Echo in their homes and the two devices will talk to each other. “On November 30, 2016 Amazon announced that they will make the speech recognition and natural language processing technology behind Alexa available for developers under the name of Amazon Lex. This new service would allow developers to create their own chatbots that can interact in a conversational manner, similar to Alexa.” Technology is becoming more advanced everyday. Humans are only able to access 10% of their brain, what would happen if in theory Artificial Intelligence becomes programed to access more than 10% of their human based mimicking “brain”. What if they became smarter than us? Back in 1968, there was a movie made about the first Artificial Intelligence theory. The robot ends up turning its back on the humans and goes against them. That film, being the first view of Artificial Intelligence, scared a lot of people into not liking the idea of Artificial Intelligence. This film gave people reasons to be wary of it so that is why a lot of people probably do not like it. People were shown what is a possible negative outcome of this new idea of an invention. Why would people want to promote something that could harm them? What if they became smarter than us? That is the major reason that myself and others are wary of this new and producing technology. If Artificial Intelligence started using more than 10% of it’s brain then they could overthrow the human race. This world would go from being run by the human race to being run by more intelligently human based programs. I do not think that this is what was meant for this world to come to. Artificial Intelligence is a terrifying, new thing. There are possibilities that we can not be prepared for. What if they become smarter than us? Why would people want to promote something that could harm them? People are scared of new things but I believe that this is something to be questionable about. “Teens who spend more time on screens are less happy and more depressed, and those who spend more time with friends in person are happier and less depressed.” is a statement made by Ogla Tropinina. Although I agree with the statement made I do also make my argument about how our failing economy is affecting this generation and creating an imbalance in our brains that is creating a rise in depression.
The statement made above by Ogla Tropinina is believable to an extent. There is a thing called introverts and extroverts, introverts like little to no social interaction and extroverts love social interaction and couldn’t live without it. Talking to friends over a cell phone or computer is a preferable option for an introvert because of social anxiety, being forced into a situation of social interaction when you do not want to can create high levels of anxiety. There was a study done that proves this point however, how are we supposed to avoid it in our youth when youth are targeted the most via school? Since I started grade seven the use of technology has increased drastically influencing our schoolwork. Having internet is supposed to be a luxury but it is treated as a necessity because if you don’t you cannot complete your schoolwork or hand it in. Our entire school relies on technology for teaching purposes. School already creates depression but adding excessive amounts of technology when it supposedly exposes youth to a high risk of more depression is contradicting. If you ask people why millenials are more depressed than any other generation they will simply say “the economy”, isn’t it funny how one thing can make so many people depressed? However it is not just one simple thing, the economy controls the future that we want, the money, and the type of life we live. We all want a life that we can be proud of, a life that we do not want a vacation from but while we keep working with the same wages, the pricing of houses, goods, and services are going up. Doing everything you can and still failing is depressing. Often we choose staying inside over going outside. Organic food is now more expensive than junk food. If we are barely making enough money to make ends meet then why are we going to spend double to triple the amount of money on food that is nutritious and good for your body when we can save a little extra money by buying the cheap junk food? Junk food is also more accessible and faster than buying vegetables and meat and taking it home to cook. There are fast food restaurants everywhere you look, there is franchise after franchise over populating cities. When you eat food that isn’t packed with nutrients you are depriving your body of things to help it function. This will make your body have trouble producing hormones and can create a chemical imbalance in your brain, this creates depression. Many things can cause depression so we can’t blame it directly on technology. We cannot blame depression on these things when we are not doing anything to eliminate the problems. Essentially we are making ourselves depressed by not fixing the problem. We are the problem. |
